Biosecurity Measures in Human and Animal Infection Control

Biosecurity refers to strategies designed to prevent the introduction and spread of infectious agents. It is a critical component of infection control in both human healthcare and animal management.

In human healthcare, biosecurity includes controlled access to facilities, screening of visitors, and isolation of infected individuals. Personal protective equipment (PPE) protects healthcare workers and patients from exposure.

Animal biosecurity focuses on preventing disease introduction into farms, clinics, and shelters. Measures include controlled animal movement, quarantine of new arrivals, and disinfection protocols for equipment and personnel.

Transportation biosecurity is essential, as animals and people can carry pathogens between locations. Cleaning vehicles and enforcing movement restrictions reduce spread.

Training and awareness are vital. Workers must understand biosecurity risks and follow protocols consistently. Weak adherence can compromise even the best systems.

Strong biosecurity reduces disease outbreaks, protects livelihoods, and safeguards public health.
